Traditional carols only
The word list is built from carols in the public domain, which keeps the sheet legal to print and distribute freely. Modern songs are not included and are not worth adding yourself if you plan to hand the sheet out at an event.
What you get instead is vocabulary with some weight to it. Wenceslas, wassail, bethlehem and gloria are unusual letter combinations, which makes them more interesting to find than snow and tree.
Pair it with a music round
This sheet works well as the warm-up to a music bingo round or a quiz. Hand it out while people arrive, then use the same carols for the listening round, which gives the evening a thread rather than a series of unrelated games.
The music bingo page uses the same carol list, so the two sheets sit together naturally.
For carol services and choirs
Printed on 100gsm at 100 percent scaling, the sheet folds into an order of service without the grid lines disappearing into the crease. It gives children something to do during the readings, which choir leaders and churchwardens both tend to appreciate.
Questions
- Which songs are the words taken from?
- Traditional carols in the public domain, including Good King Wenceslas, Away in a Manger, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night and The First Noel. No modern or licensed songs are used.
- Are any lyrics printed on the sheet?
- No. The puzzle uses single words associated with traditional carols, not lines of lyric, so there is nothing on the sheet that is under copyright.
- Can I add my own carol words?
- Yes, the list is editable. If you are handing the sheet out at a public event, stick to traditional carols rather than modern songs.
- Does it work alongside a music quiz round?
- Yes. The music bingo page draws on the same carol list, so the word search works as a warm-up and the bingo as the listening round.
