Type any message
Letters, numbers, an ampersand and a space, which prints as a blank flag. Merry Christmas is fourteen flags plus a gap, so four sheets. Happy New Year is twelve plus two gaps. A name for a birthday in December works just as well, since the flag designs are seasonal rather than the letters.
Letters are drawn as vector outlines rather than set in a font, so they stay sharp at any size and print identically on every machine without a font substitution surprise.
Hanging it
Two options. Punch marks at the top corners, which is the stronger method and takes garden string or ribbon. Or the fold-over tab, where you fold the top 15mm over the string and glue or tape it, which is faster for a long run and looks neater from the front.
For a run over about two metres, use the punch holes. A folded tab on a long run sags between flags because the string slides inside the fold.
Shapes, styles and card
Triangular, scalloped or straight-edged flags. Letters in a serif, a bold geometric sans or an outline style for colouring in, which turns the whole thing into a children's activity that ends up on the wall.
160gsm card. Paper curls and the flags twist on the string within a day, which looks worse than it sounds. If you only have paper, hang it somewhere out of a draught.
Questions
- Can I print any message as bunting?
- Yes. Type letters, numbers or spaces and each character gets its own flag. Merry Christmas is fourteen flags plus a gap, which is four sheets at four flags per page.
- How do I hang the flags?
- Either punch the marked top corners and thread string through, or use the fold-over tab and tape the flag over the string. Punch holes are better for runs over about two metres.
- Is there a version children can colour?
- Yes. The outline letter style prints the letters as hollow shapes to colour in, which makes the bunting an activity that ends up on the wall.
- What card should I use?
- 160gsm. Paper flags curl and twist on the string within a day. If paper is all you have, hang the bunting out of any draught.
