Christmas Wish List Template for Children

A wish list drawn as a letter rather than a form. The sheet is headed To Santa, asks for a name and an age, then gives three numbered slots for the things wanted most. Each slot has two wide ruled lines and a dashed box beside it marked draw it here, which is what makes this version work for a child who cannot yet write much.

Three choices, then the rest

Asking a five year old for a list produces either nothing or forty things. Three numbered slots at the top force the important ones out first, and the drawing box beside each means a child who can only manage a shaky word still produces something a parent can read.

Underneath, a section headed And If There Is Room gives four more ruled lines for everything else. That section has its own control above the sheet, set to four lines or six.

It reads as a letter, not a worksheet

The heading runs A Letter to the North Pole above the title, and the sheet signs off with a line about leaving it out on the 24th with something for the reindeer. The lines are wide, the typeface on the headings is a serif, and there is no grid or table anywhere on it.

If a child would rather write properly rather than fill in slots, the lined letter to Santa sheets are the better starting point. This one suits the age where drawing still does more of the work than writing.

Printing it for a class

At 100 percent scaling on plain paper a class set comes off in a couple of minutes and uses almost no ink, because the sheet is rules and headings with no filled artwork. The drawing boxes are dashed rather than solid so they do not dominate the page.

For something to keep or post, 120gsm takes a felt tip in the drawing box without the ink showing through on the back.

Questions

What age is this wish list template for?
Roughly four to eight. The three top slots have a drawing box beside them for children who cannot write much yet, and the ruled lines are wide enough for early handwriting without feeling babyish.
How many things can a child put on it?
Three in the numbered slots at the top, each with its own drawing box, then four more on the ruled lines underneath. Switching the extra lines control to six takes the total to nine.
Is this the same as a letter to Santa?
It is a shorter version of one. The sheet is headed To Santa and signs off like a letter, but it asks for a list rather than a full letter. The letter to Santa templates give a whole page to write on instead.
Can a parent type the list in?
Yes. The name, age and all the ruled lines are text boxes, and anything typed into them prints and appears in the PDF. Most people leave them blank so the child can write on the sheet.
