Preschool Christmas Colouring Pages

Fourteen sheets drawn for children aged two to four: 3mm outlines, fewer than ten shapes on a page and no gap narrower than a centimetre. A crayon held in a fist still produces something the child recognises, which is the whole point at this age.

Built for a fist grip

Most two and three year olds hold a crayon in a closed hand and move the whole arm. Anything requiring wrist control is wasted on them. These sheets ask only that colour lands roughly in the right half of the page, and the thick outlines still read as a shape afterwards.

Shapes are large and separated: a bauble, a star, a mitten, a simple tree, a plain stocking, a Santa hat. Six to nine of them at most, each one big enough to cover with a few sweeps.

Beyond crayons

The same sheets take dot markers, finger paint, torn tissue paper and stickers. A three year old sticking circles onto a bare tree is doing something closer to their actual skill level than colouring is, and it produces a far better result. Print on 120gsm so wet media does not go through.

Two sheets in the set are built for dot markers specifically, with circles sized to a standard marker tip. They are also good for counting, since the circles are grouped.

For nursery and childminder settings

Print in greyscale at 100 percent scaling on 120gsm, four to a page if you want shorter activities. These work as a free choice table activity that needs no adult explanation, which is usually the deciding factor in a room with twenty children.

Questions

What age are preschool colouring pages for?
Two to four. Outlines are around 3mm, there are fewer than ten shapes on a sheet and no gap is narrower than a centimetre, so a fist grip and a whole arm movement still work.
Can toddlers use these with dot markers?
Yes. Two sheets are drawn specifically for dot markers, with circles sized to a standard tip. The rest take dot markers, finger paint, tissue paper and stickers.
What paper should I use for paint or glue?
At least 120gsm. Copier paper at 80gsm cockles when wet and tears under a glue stick, which frustrates a small child more than the activity engages them.
Are these free for a nursery?
Yes. Unlimited free printing for nurseries, childminders, playgroups and libraries. You cannot sell the sheets or republish the files.
