Two drawings, one to a sheet. A penguin standing on a line of snow in a bobble hat and a ribbed scarf, and a plainer penguin built from bigger pieces for a younger child. Neither one has anything of December on it, so the sheet is as much use in February as it is before the holidays.
The same two penguins, without the Christmas
These are the two penguin drawings the site already has, shown here as a winter sheet rather than a festive one. Nothing on either picture needed changing to make that true: there is no holly, no tree and no present anywhere on them, and a bobble hat and a scarf are winter clothes rather than Christmas ones.
If you came looking for a penguin to pin up in January, that is the whole difference, and it is worth saying rather than dressing up. The festive version of this page sits alongside it for anyone who wants the same drawings filed under December.
What is on each sheet
The dressed penguin stands square to the page. The hat has a turned-up brim band with a row of small shapes set into it, the scarf goes round the neck with one end hanging down the front and a few lines at the fringe, and the wings, the webbed feet and the big oval front panel are all drawn as separate closed shapes with a ground line under the feet.
The plainer penguin keeps the body, the front panel, two wings, two feet and a face and drops the rest. Both sheets print at three line weights; Chunky widens every outline and takes the gap between the front panel and the body edge from fiddly to obvious. Press Redraw and the small shapes along the hat brim are drawn again from a different set.
Two is two
There is no third penguin hiding behind a Redraw button, so if you need a stack of different sheets for a group this is not the page to stand on its own. The arctic animals set puts this penguin next to a polar bear, a snowy owl and a seal pup, which gives eight sheets rather than two.
The step by step drawing lesson is the other way to spend longer on a penguin: the child builds one from an egg shape rather than filling in an outline. There is also a cut-out template if you want penguins on a window instead of on a fridge.
Questions
- How many penguin sheets can I print?
- There are two drawings, a dressed penguin and a plainer one, and you can print as many copies of either as you need. The Redraw button changes the small shapes along the hat brim rather than giving you a new penguin.
- Is this the same penguin as the Christmas one?
- Yes, the drawings are the same two. The difference is how the page treats them: nothing on either picture is festive, so they are filed here as winter sheets for anyone printing after the decorations come down.
- Which sheet suits a three or four year old?
- The plainer penguin with the line weight set to Chunky. Its body, front panel, wings and feet are all large rounded shapes, and the thicker outline leaves wider gaps between them for a crayon to stop at.
- Do these work as a winter display?
- They do. A row of coloured penguins along a classroom wall reads as January rather than Christmas, and printed on card the plainer drawing cuts out in one pass because it is a single closed outline.
