Christmas Word Search for Kids

Ten short words in a 10 by 10 grid, placed across and down only, never backwards and never diagonally. The word bank prints under the grid in large type. It is a puzzle a five year old can get through with a bit of help and a seven year old can do alone.

Why forwards only matters

Reading backwards is a separate skill from reading, and for a child still learning to decode words it turns a puzzle into a slog. Switching off reverse and diagonal placement is the single biggest thing you can do to make a word search age appropriate.

The default words are short and familiar: star, bell, snow, tree, gift, elf, sled, holly, Santa, cake. All four to five letters, all words a child in year one can read without sounding out every time.

The word bank is part of the puzzle

Words print under the grid in large type with a tick box next to each. Children cross them off as they go, which keeps track of progress and stops the frustration of searching for a word that was already found.

If you want a slightly harder version for an older child, raise the grid to 12 by 12 and switch diagonals back on, but leave reverse off. That is usually the right step up for an eight or nine year old.

Classroom use

Swap the word list for whatever your class is working on. Spelling words, topic vocabulary or the names of children in the group all work, and a word search with your own class names in it gets noticeably more attention than one without.

Questions

What age is this word search for?
Roughly five to nine. Ten short words in a 10 by 10 grid, placed across and down only, with a large word bank underneath to tick off.
Are words hidden backwards or diagonally?
No. Reverse and diagonal placement are switched off by default because reading backwards is a separate skill from reading and makes the puzzle much harder for young children.
Can I use my class spelling list instead?
Yes. Replace the word list with any words you like. Short words of four to six letters fit the 10 by 10 grid best, and the grid grows automatically if a word is too long.
Is there an answer sheet?
Yes. The solved grid prints on its own page with every word circled, so you can mark quickly or check a child who is stuck.
