Christmas Gift Certificate Template

A voucher for something you are going to do rather than something you bought. Two to a sheet as it opens at 180mm by 120mm, or one filling the page. The lines read This entitles, to, Value, From and Expires, which is the shortest set of words that makes a promise specific enough to be held to.

The two kinds

Gift voucher is the default. This entitles somebody to something, it has a value, it comes from somebody and it runs out on a date. That is the one for a cinema trip, an afternoon of babysitting, a day out, or a job around the house you have been promising since August.

Reward certificate swaps the five lines for Awarded to, for, Reward, Given by and Date, and changes the heading. Same frame, different job: that one is for a classroom, a club or a chart on a kitchen wall.

One to a sheet or two

Two to a sheet is what it opens on, each piece 180mm by 120mm with a thin grey cut line round it and a fine frame inside that. It is the setting for making half a dozen at once.

One to a sheet drops the cut line and prints a full page frame about 184mm by 256mm at the standard weight instead of the fine one, with the lines set larger and a motif filling the space under them. That is the version to put in an envelope on its own.

The value line, and why it is worth filling in

The value line is short and the design's own motif sits beside it, so it does not leave a hole across the middle of the voucher. It is there because a voucher with no value on it is easy to forget and awkward to redeem.

A value does not have to be money. One afternoon, two hours, three films, one lie-in: anything countable works better than a blank, because the person holding it then knows when it has been used up.

Filling it in and printing

Every line can be typed on screen before you print, or left blank with a rule under it to write on. Typing is worth it on the From and Expires lines, which are the two people usually forget by hand.

160gsm card, printed at 100 percent with Fit to Page off. On the two-up sheet cut along the thin grey lines, which are drawn lighter than the frame on purpose so an imperfect cut does not show.

Questions

What lines does the gift voucher have?
Five: This entitles, to, Value, From and Expires. The reward certificate version swaps them for Awarded to, for, Reward, Given by and Date, and changes the heading to match.
How many vouchers print on a sheet?
Two at 180mm by 120mm as it opens, with cut lines between them, or one filling the page at about 184mm by 256mm with a heavier frame and larger type.
Can I type the details before printing?
Yes. Click any line and type, and what you typed prints in the same place and the same type you see on screen. Any line you leave blank prints as a rule to write on.
Does the value have to be an amount of money?
No, and it usually should not be. One afternoon, two hours or three films works better than a blank, because the person holding the voucher can tell when it has been used up.
Is the template free to use?
Yes. It prints and downloads free with no account and no watermark, and you can make as many vouchers as you like for family, a classroom or a club.
